Literacy

Literacy

Excellent Literacy is vital in providing a solid foundation to a child's education. The areas of Literacy involve reading, writing, speaking and listening. All levels of ability are catered for with class groups and individually. Children are organised in groups for writing and reading to cater for their individual needs.

The children take part in guided reading activities using a common text. They are taught strategies to assist in approaching new text and to read for meaning and with fluency. The children work at learning centre activities which are designed to reinforce new skills.

The children also participate in guided writing activities and are expected to write each day. VCOP and the Big Write provide the overriding framework for our writing

ABC Reading Eggs also makes learning to read interesting and engaging for kids, with great online reading games and activities. Our students love the games, songs, golden eggs and other rewards which, along with feeling proud of their reading, really motivate children to keep exploring and learning.

Speaking and Listening is an important part of our program. Clear and logical speaking supports a child’s language development and children are encouraged to listen to others. Oral language is a strong component of our VCOP writing. Skills are developed through talk.

Reading assessment is continual, students are benchmarked against the Founts and Pinnel or PM assessment kits.

Explicit phonic and phonetic awareness instruction forms a component of our reading and spelling through the Sounds-write program. Support is provided through MacqLit and MultiLit withdrawal programs.
